Picking Out A Nickname For Dawson Mercer

Let’s all breath a collective sigh of relief that the San Jose Sharks didn’t get Dawson Mercer in the Timo Meier deal. That’s bad news for Mike Grier and company, but great news for the Devils. On Wednesday night against the Colorado Avalanche, Mercer has already surpassed his point total from his rookie year with his 43rd point. Sophomore slump? Never heard of her.

With all the spotlight Mercer has been getting, the internet has tried to come up with a nickname for pour second year phenomenon. Let’s take a look at some of the ones we’ve seen people try to get going. Let’s also add in a few of our own.

The Mercer Express

This one came courtesy of the NHL twitter account after Mercer scored the overtime game winner against the Los Angeles Kings. It doesn’t sound catchy at all, sadly. Is it supposed to reference New Jersey’s affinity for public transit and our much delayed NJ Transit rail system? Also Mercer isn’t a train, at this point he’s a straight up wagon.

M-Dog

This next one comes from the Devils on MSG Twitter account. It’s short, sweet and to the point. It also sounds a little bit like “mad dog.” That type of name strikes fear into opponents. If Dawson Mercer was a dog though, he probably wouldn’t be an intimidating one. Maybe a beagle, a yorkie, or a Jack Russel terrier?

Mercer Mania

Maybe not a nickname for him as much as his newly found uncanny ability to find the back of the net on a nightly basis. We love alliteration. If anyone at the team store is listening, we need to start selling “Mercer Mania” t-shirts as soon as possible. Roll them out as a new arrival next to those Timo Meier jerseys. You did order enough Timo Meier jerseys, right?

Merc-dog

We’ve seen this one show up a few times on different accounts. We get where it’s coming from. Dawson Mercer does have that “dog in him.” Is it supposed to sound like “Mercer” though? Because it doesn’t sound like “Mercer.”

Dawg

Just like we said above, Dawson Mercer has that dog in him. This is a nickname Randy Jackson would be proud of. If Dawson Mercer ever blocks shots it gives us an excuse to post the American Idol era, “Yeah, it’s gonna be a no from me dawg,” meme. Unlike Randy Jackson’s critic of William Hugn we’re a bit indifferent towards this one.

Dawson Mercer’s Creek

Shout out to my group chat of Devils’ fans for coming up with this one. The reference to the classic drama series from the WB was just there for the taking. Younger fans might not get the reference.

For all those Devils’ fans under the age of 25, it was a television show we used to watch back in the old days before we had iPhones, TikTok and the YouTube. You’re generation doesn’t know what it was like back in the old days of the Clinton administration (or whoever was Prime Minister of Canada in the 1990’s). Now get off my lawn!

It’s Mercin’ Time

This is one of our own ideas. We took the iconic line from the cinematic masterpiece “Morbius” starring Jared Leto and turned it into a nickname for our favorite second-year Devil (well, second year NHLer, we don’t want to offend Dougie Hamilton).

Apparently, Jared Leto says this line a lot in the movie. We don’t know, we didn’t watch it, just like the rest of America, but we did see the memes! According to the memes, he said this line a lot. So the next time Dawson scores, “IT’S MERCIN’ TIME!”
