The Devils hit the road to take on the Islanders Saturday night.

What a way to kick off the 2026-27 season. In a game which saw Joseph Woll stand on his head for the Philadelphia Flyers (0-1-1), the New Jersey Devils (1-0) keep fighting. In a back-and-forth affair, the Devils defeated earned a well-deserved two points against the Flyers in overtime, thanks to the heroics of Jack Hughes.

Game Recap

First Period

The Devils started the period strong and pushed the pace in the Flyers’ end of the ice. They got a number of power play chances but just weren’t able to break through.

Despite New Jersey holding a heavy lead in shots on goal, the Flyers drew first blood. After cycling the puck from low to high, a shot by Travis Sanheim deflected off of Rasmus Ristolainen screening Devils goalie Jake Allen.  When the horn sounded, the Devils would be down 1-0.

At the end of the frame, New Jersey had 14 shots on goal, but six came on the power play. Furthermore, the Devils were 0-for-3 with the man advantage in the period. It was a very dominant five-on-five period for the Devils, as the Devils controlled the shot attempts share 20-8. Furthermore, they dominated the expected goals share too, holding 83.36% of the share.

Second Period

The Devils were like a swarm of bees to open the period, picking up where they left off in the first period. The first high-danger chance came from Jesper Bratt right in front of the net. He fired off the original shot and then he grabbed the rebound and got stuffed again by Joseph Woll.

The Flyers generated minimal chances against the Devils in this period. Eventually the dam finally broke and the Devils managed to tie the hockey game. New Jersey sustained great offensive pressure and a sloppy clearing attempt led to the goal. After catching the clearing attempt, Dougie Hamilton fired the puck towards the goal that hit the post and into the net. A sigh of relief for a team that dominated possession. Both teams traded chances with a good back and forth affair and the two teams headed to the third period tied at one.

The Devils really pushed the pace this period, relentless with their effort. They dominated the shot attempts share once again 32-10. Scoring chances were the best of any period this game, seeing them generate 15 to the Flyers’ five.

Third Period

It was another back-and-fourth period in the third. After battling for the puck along the boards, Sean Couturier found a wide open Travis Sanheim at the far end of the blue line. He skated in all alone and ripped a slap shot past Jake Allen to retake the lead.

The lead did not last long, as the Devils struck back to tie the game. An active Luke Hughes jumped up into the play and received a back hand pass from Luke Evangelista. He skated down the middle of the ice and ripped a shot top shelf over Woll. Aside from the power play earlier in the period, it was a clean period with each team fighting for that extra goal. Much like the last period, the two teams were headed into overtime.

The third period was tighter contested between the two teams. Shot attempts were much closer (22-16), shots on goal (9-8), expected goals (0.53-0.51), all in favor of the Devils. Both teams capitalized on the chances they did get, landing this team in extra time.

Overtime

The Devils lit the lamp for the final time and sent the Prudential Crowd home happy. Off an odd-man rush, Jesper Bratt fed a pass over to an open Jack Hughes who buried the puck into the open net. A great celebration with the stick thrown into the crowd and the Devils skated off with a 3-2 victory.

Wrap Up

The Devils defeated the Flyers in overtime. The Devils were the stronger team through the three periods, getting a much deserved victory. All four goals in regulation were scored by defenseman.
