Another day, another signing for the Metropolitan Riveters. It is a big one as Miye D’Oench and Rebecca Russo have returned to the team for one more season. The Riveters also inked Harvard defenseman Chelsea Ziadie to a contract.
D’Oench, 24, returns for her third season in the NWHL—all with Metropolitan. She posted 30 points in the regular season career (13 G 17 A), and also notched two assists in their run to the Isobel Cup. To say this is a key signing is an understatement. Combine regular season and playoffs for a second, and the Riveters record may surprise you. With D’Oench in the lineup, they were 11-0; without they went 4-3. This shows how important she is to this team and will be this coming season.
Russo, 24, is now also in her third season of the league. So far has 37 points (13 G 24 A) in her regular season career. She also notched the game-winning goal in the semi final game against the Connecticut Whale, and picked up an assist. Although the most interesting stat (by far) is she will be entering her third season, with zero career penalty minutes. She is the most disciplined player in the league, and it is very difficult to go through 40 games in a career without taking a single penalty. It will be interesting to see if she can retain this streak in 2018-2019 as well as have another top five season.
Ziadie just graduated from Harvard this past May (D’Oench is also an alumni). She had 16 points in 102 games for the Crimson Tide. It is well known that she is being brought in for her defense because they have enough offense from Courtney Burke and Jenny Ryan. She becomes the fifth defenseman to sign with Metropolitan and at this moment she would be paired with Michelle Picard, but that is definitely subject to change.
The Riveters are still in search of a coach and still need to finish filling out the roster. Still plenty of work to be done, be on the look out for more news as we approach August.
