Despite being outshot 42-28, the New Jersey Devils offense absolutely exploded tonight, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 8-3.
If we are being honest this game was not Devils domination, as a matter of fact it is safe to say after they got Marc-Andre Fleury pulled early in the second, it was all Vegas for the rest of that period. Blake Coleman had himself a fantastic game, notching two goals including the game’s first on a gutsy pass from Brian Gibbons shorthanded.
Ever since Gibbons and Coleman started playing together again, they have been scoring a bit more; it is as if Gibbons was never injured. Taylor Hall also got himself back on the scoresheet with a goal and assist, bringing him to 76 points this season.
Michael Grabner also picked up his first two points as a Devil tonight with a goal and an assist. It was an interesting game from Grabner as he had a couple of negatives to go with his breakout game for New Jersey. He took a lazy penalty which led to a Vegas goal and also had a clear defensive turnover that nearly proved costly again. All in all, a solid game from No. 40 in white.
The second period was by far the Devils worst period last night. They scored two goals in 36 seconds in the first two and a half minutes of the period. This got Fleury pulled and from then on the rest of the period was all Vegas. It may have been 4-0 for awhile but it certainly felt like the game could have been tied without the stellar performance of Keith Kinkaid. He had himself an incredible night making 39 saves and really kept the lead in tact following the onslaught and kept the lead at 4-2.
The most important takeaway from tonight is how great it is that the Devils are finally getting scoring from their secondary players and giving a rest to the top line players. But tonight the team saw production from almost everyone as 14 players had at least one point. This is exactly what they need going down the stretch here as there are now only 12 games left and New Jersey sits in the first wild card position currently.
This race is going to have a crazy finish and you are not going to want to miss a single minute.
