Game Summary

The New Jersey Devils weren’t able to mount a two-goal comeback, which resulted in their first regulation loss in three game With the loss, the Devils now hold a 8-9-2 record.

The first period was the Devils’ kryptonite. The Carolina Hurricanes struck twice in the first thirty seconds of the game. Justin Williams opened the scoring with a partial breakaway, and Michael Ferland scored just seconds later on a two-on-one. Luckily, the Devils were able to answer back with a Pavel Zacha goal off a beautiful pass from Jesper Bratt.

Unfortunately, there was no more scoring in the game after the first period. The Devils did a great job responding after the two quick goals. However, playing from behind from the start of the game is not ideal. The final shots on goal were 34-25 in favor of the Devils. Goaltender Cory Schneider was on the losing sides of things, while Curtis McElhinney got the win.

Game Notes

• Whenever you face a backup goaltender, you are expected to put up more than one goal. Coming into the game last night, Hurricanes goaltender Curtis McElhinney had only posted a save percentage above .900 once in his five starts. The Devils did a great job firing shots on him, however, like they have done most of the season, were not able to convert.
• Goaltender Cory Schneider performed decently compared to his past starts. However, his losing streak is now extended to 16 (0-14-2). Last night was the first game over this 16-game stretch that Schneider allowed two or less goals. Bottom line is he must be better. If he does not improve, the Devils should be in a market for a backup goaltender.
• Forward Pavel Zacha is back with vengeance. In his four games back, he has scored two goals and compiled a +3 rating. Not to mention, the Devils are 2-1-1 since his return. In order to turn their season around, Zacha must continue to play well.
