One streak ends, another begins as Blue Jackets defeat Devils, 3-1

NEWARK, NJ – In what was a scoreless affair for the majority of the night, the New Jersey Devils unfortunately had their four-game winning streak snapped by the now 2-8-0 Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Devils outshot the Blue Jackets 24-14, and led in shots on goal throughout all three periods. They also went 1-for-4 on the power play, with Kyle Palmieri scoring the lone power play goal for New Jersey with 2:28 remaining in regulation. It was Palmieri’s second goal of the season assisted by Jiri Tlusty and Travis Zajac.

Devils head coach John Hynes stated that his team needs to “find a way to put the puck in the net” regardless of being on a man advantage or being on the ice at even strength.

“It’s power play and 5-on-5,” Hynes said. “When you look at the first period, in particular, we had chances on the power play and chances on 5-on-5. They didn’t do in. So, we’ve got to find a way to be able to put the puck in the net whether it’s on the power play – we had some good looks, it didn’t go in, but 5-on-5 we had chances too and we’ve got to bear down in those situations.”

Boone Jenner and Cam Atkinson scored just 35 seconds apart in the third and Scott Hartnell gave the Blue Jackets an additional tally to secure the victory for Columbus at 14:47 of the third period.

Devils captain Andy Greene, who played for 19:03 on Tuesday, believed that his team “self-destructed” after the two quick goals by the Blue Jackets.

“We played a pretty solid game until 7-8 minutes left. We just self-destructed a little bit.” Greene said. “We have to be better than that. I thought we played a pretty solid game up until then. They got that first one, which is fine, but we have to bounce back after that. We didn’t.”

Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky earned first star honors on Tuesday as he stopped 23 of 24 shots on goal. He also maintained a .958 save percentage and was between the pipes for the entire 60 minutes of play.

Despite the Blue Jackets coming out of Newark with their second consecutive victory, newly appointed head coach John Tortorella believed his team’s performance was not up to his standards.

“We didn’t play that well,” Tortorella said. “But the good thing about it is we still grinded away. I thought we defended well, Bob was solid and to me, that’s the biggest positive. Those are important games to win, and we’ll be on the other side of it sometime during the year, so we’ll take it and go from there.”

The Devils will travel to Philadelphia tomorrow in preparation for their first matchup of the season against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday at 7:00 PM on MSG.

Comcast SportsNet will also televise the game to Philadelphia-based television subscribers beginning at 7:00 PM.
