The wait is finally over, as the Devils prepare to take the ice at home against the New York Rangers and on the road against the Montreal Canadiens. There is certainly a lot of buzz around this team heading into the season and for good reason. With the rosters being broken up, here are some quick highlights as to what I will be watching in these two games.
What to Watch
– The Hall-Hischier-Bratt line has been back together during practice and some scrimmages, which is certainly something to watch. Hischier and Bratt both have put on some extra weight, which should help them win some extra puck battles and remain strong contributors late in the season.
– Ty Smith and Egor Yakovlev will look to show off their talents on the blue line. Both young players will look to put their stamp on this roster and aim to contribute in all three zones.
– Michael McLeod should take that next step towards really boosting the team’s center depth. His 6’2 frame is a much-needed addition up the middle.
– Brett Seney is a guy to keep your eye on. He has good playmaking ability with quick hands and a strong hockey IQ.
– Drew Stafford has the ability to provide a veteran presence, as well as add depth at along the wing. He has to really impress during this preseason, or his spot will end up being given to a younger, hungrier player.
– Pavel Zacha is closing in on the “now or never” territory. His big body is something that this team would love to keep as a net-front presence. But things just haven’t seemed to come together for him yet. Zacha could really benefit from some early season success. And having a strong preseason will go a long way to boost his confidence.
Both games should be interesting to watch and provide a great opportunity to see what the younger prospects can do.
