The New Jersey Devils (33-13-4) picked up where they left off before the break. New Jersey continued their win streak as they defeated the Vancouver Canucks in overtime by a score of 5-4.
The game featured a lot of goal scoring. So much so, it saw the Canucks comeback from a 4-1 deficit. The Devils were able to still register the win, thanks to another overtime, power play goal.
Game Summary
First Period
The first period saw both teams cash in with a goal. Vancouver got the party started early and was the better team early on. Luke Schenn sprung winger Andrei Kuzmenko into the zone and he undressed Dougie Hamilton for the early goal.
However, once the game settled down, the Devils went on to control possession. Picking up where he left off was Jack Hughes. A pretty passing play by Dougie Hamilton and Fabian Zetterlund sent Hughes in for a breakaway and he tucked it under Collin Delia for the game-tying goal.
As the horn sounded, the game was tied and the Devils outshot Vancouver 14-11.
Second Period
The second period was all New Jersey to start, but Vancouver would roar back. The Devils seized control at the midway point. New Jersey would go on to score three goals in under a minute.
A little over nine minutes in, a Dougie Hamilton wrist shot got deflected by Ondrej Palat. Then, Palat fired a shot from the slot for his second of the game. Just 21-seconds after that, Fabian Zetterlund slid the puck over to Jack Hughes for his second tuck of the game.
However, Vancouver would go on to respond. After good puck movement, Luke Schenn fired a slap shot through traffic to stop the bleeding.
The Canucks weren’t done yet. After making a key save on an odd-man rush, the Canucks transitioned the other way and Riley Stillman found Curtis Lazar alone in front to cut the deficit to one. As the horn sounded, the Devils held now a slim 4-3.
Third Period
The third period was all Vancouver. The comeback was made complete when Phillip Di Giuseppe tied the game. After a bad pinch by Dougie Hamilton, he went in two-on-one and sniped a shot top shelf on Vitek Vanecek. Vancouver would control most of the possession, but could not score the winning goal.
Overtime
New Jersey would emerge victorious. After getting a late power play, the team cashed in with the man advantage. After stellar puck movement, Jack Hughes slid a pass across ice for a one-timed blast by Jesper Bratt. The Devils would send the fans hope happy with a 5-4 victory.
Wrap Up
New Jersey swept the Canucks in the two-game season series. The Devils had four players with multi-point games: Hughes (two goals, one assist), Hamilton (three assists), Zetterlund (two assists), and Palat (two goals). Vitek Vanecek secured a victory in his tenth-straight start, but did not look strong at all.
Game Notes
- Jack Hughes picked up where he left off. He scored two goals and assisted on the game-winner. This was his fifth-straight multi-point game.
- The Hischier line continues to be the best. As a line, they had the best possession (66.67 Corsi-for percentage) metrics and scored two goals. They had the most chances as a line with 16 total. Great night overall for that trio
