The New Jersey Devils’ road trip continued against the Utah Mammoth. The Devils have yet to win consecutive games since November 28, but finally did so against the Mammoth Friday night. They won a tight contest 2-1 and in the backs of their goaltender.
Game Recap
First Period
The Devils got off to a strong start. Dawson Mercer had a high-danger chance right in front of Karel Vejmelka, but couldn’t get it by his goalie pad. Both teams traded chances, until the Devils got into penalty trouble. That’s where the Mammoth went to work.
After a failed clearing attempt by the Devils, Sean Durzi kept the puck in the zone. He found Daniil But in the slot, who roofed a backhanded shot passed Jacob Markström for his first career goal. The Devils then went to work with their own power play and a delayed cross checking penalty extended it to a five-on-three. The power play couldn’t generate any chances and showed little life. The period ended and the Devils found themselves down 1-0 entering period two.
Things were evenly played at five on five in the first period. Shot attempts were 16-14 in favor of the Mammoth, but shots on goal were six each. It was a lower event period and neither team had much success in the high-danger areas of the ice. The Mammoth led in the expected goals share 0.75-0.58.
Second Period
Both teams traded power plays early into the second period. The Devils failed once again to convert with the man advantage, seeing them 0-for-3 on the night. On a questionable roughing call, the Mammoth got their chance. Fortunately, the Devils killed off the power play to keep it a one goal game. Even though the Devils failed to convert on another power play, they tied the game moments later.
As the Devils transitioned to the attack, good movement and effort led to the Connor Brown goal. Dougie Hamilton pushed along the boards and the rebound corralled being the net. Nico Hischier took the puck and fed a pass to Brown, who ripped it short side passed Vejmelka. Both teams pushed at the end, but went into the third period tied at one.
Thankfully Markström was at his best. The Mammoth out-attempted the Devils 21-3 and outshot them 12-1. Furthermore, the Mammoth controlled the expected goals share at 87.8% in the period, showcasing their dominance. The Devils didn’t generate a single high danger attempt and scoring chances were bare.
Third Period
The Devils finally grabbed the lead and with the man advantage. After generating shots from the point, it was Stefan Noesen who deflected the initial shot and then pounced on the rebound to make it 2-1. Both teams traded chances and kept pressing, but it was a low event offense for the remaining of the third period. The Devils hung on and defeated the Mammoth 2-1.
Wrap Up
This was a tight game between the two clubs and the goalies stood tall. Daniil But scored his first career goal and it was all Devils the rest of the way.
