Preview: New Jersey Devils Return from All-Star Break with Game against Ottawa Senators

NJ Devils vs Ottawa Senators - University Calendar - Montclair State University

Match Overview

The All-Star weekend is officially in the books, which means it’s time for more New Jersey Devils hockey. Up first is a matchup with the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Center. This is where the Devils will look to pick up somewhere besides the 7-1 loss to Toronto they left off on.

It will be an even greater challenge because the Devils’ young star, Jack Hughes, has tested positive for COVID-19 after attending the All-Star Game. Winning against any team isn’t easy when you’re in a slump, but if New Jersey can pull one out tonight, they can use that momentum to beat the Montreal Canadiens in the second game of their back-to-back.

The Devils currently hold a record of 15-25-5 and sit in eighth place in the Metropolitan Divison. The Senators, on the other hand, hold a record of 14-22-4 and are in seventh place in the Atlantic Division.

COVID Comes for Hughes

Devils’ fans had a lot to love about this year’s All-Star weekend. Not only did Jack Hughes perform a neat magic trick during the Breakaway Challenge, he also scored three goals to lead the Metropolitan Division to victory against the Pacific and Central Divisions. Unfortunately, the dynamic winger seems to have caught COVID-19 during all the festivities and was pulled from yesterday’s practice.

Hughes has been a beacon of hope in a lifeless Jersey offense, notching 27 points in 28 games played so far. With the offense sputtering, the Devils will find it extremely difficult to find goals without Hughes’ production.

Ruff Makes his Return

After the sad passing of his father, Lesson Ruff, head coach Lindy Ruff is set to return from his leave of absence tonight. Assistant coach Alain Nasredine has been at the helm for the past two games, losing twice to Toronto. Hopefully, Ruff’s return will spark a fire under his boys.

Tonight’s game can be seen on MSG+ at 7:00 pm.
