Match Overview

Coming off a 4-1 win Tuesday night, the New Jersey Devils will look to complete their home-and-home sweep with the Columbus Blue Jackets as they host them at The Rock tonight. The Devils still remain in first place in the Metropolitan Division. However, only four points separate them and the Rangers, who sit in sixth place, so getting a winning result will be of the utmost importance for New Jersey. The Devils will have Cory Schneider in net as he’ll likely face Sergei Bobrovsky once again. There will no be changes for the Devils tonight. Dalton Prout, Ben Lovejoy, and Pavel Zacha remain healthy scratches.

What to Watch

• Cory Schneider has been performing at a high level the majority of this season. He stopped 41 of 42 shots Tuesday night, and has a .942 save percentage over his last five games. With Columbus looking to retain their spot atop the Metropolitan Division, the Devils will need Cory Schneider to be on top of his game once again.

• On Tuesday, John Hynes decided to try the trio of Johansson/Zajac/Noesen together, and it paid off big time. Each player recorded at least a point and gave the Devils some much needed scoring depth behind the Hischier line. New Jersey will need much of the same tonight from Zajac and co. if they want to complete the sweep of the home-and-home with Columbus

• Although the Devils were outshot 42-36 on Tuesday night, they won the scoring chance battle 31-29 and had 20 high-danger chances as opposed to 12 against at five-on-five. This has been the case for much of the year as the Devils have the eighth-best high danger chances for percentage in the league (53 percent). While they may get outshot on a consistent basis, the Devils still manage to generate a number of quality scoring chances. If they can keep generating those high danger chances, it’ll help them secure two points tonight.

• The Devils penalty kill was a big reason for their 4-1 win Tuesday night, as they killed off six Columbus power play opportunities. Over their last ten games, New Jersey has killed 29/31 power play opportunities against, and their PK to 82.4% on the year, which is tenth-best in the league. Columbus has the league’s worst power play, clicking at a rate of less than 9 percent. New Jersey is better off not taking penalties (obviously), but with their penalty kill at the best its been all season and Columbus’ power play being league-worst, New Jersey has the clear special teams advantage. Look for that to be a major factor in the outcome of tonight’s game.
