The hockey club that is now located at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey relocated from Colorado in 1982. The original club was founded in Kansas City, as the Scouts, in 1974 before moving to Colorado, as the Rockies, in 1976. Dr. John McMullen, a Jersey City, New Jersey native, was responsible for buying, then subsequently relocating, the team from Kansas City to New Jersey. McMullen was the first inductee of the team’s Ring of Honor. Former coach Jacques Lemaire and former player Sergei Brylin are the other two members of the ring.

The New Jersey Devils won their first Stanley Cup in 1994-95, the first in organization history and the first since moving to New Jersey in 1982. The Devils followed up their 1994-95 Stanley Cup victory with championships in 1999-00 and 2002-03.

The team currently has five numbers retired, and hanging in the rafters in Newark. Those belong to No. 3 Ken Dayenko, No. 4 Scott Stevens, No. 26 Patrik Elias, and No. 27 Scott Niedermayer, and No. 30 Martin Broduer. Dayenko leads the franchise in games played (1,289), while Elias leads the franchise in goals (408), assists (617), and points (1,025).

The Devils have had two different homes since coming to New Jersey. The first was Brendan Byrne arena, which the team began playing at when they made the move. The arena, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, as renamed to Continental Airlines Arena in 1996. All three of the team’s championships were won in what is now known as simply, Meadowlands Arena. New Jersey moved to their current home, the Prudential Center, in 2007.

The Devils have two minor league affiliates. The Utica Comets, formerly of Binghamton and Albany, is the team’s AHL team. Meanwhile, the Adirondack Thunder is the team’s ECHL affiliate.
