Well we made it. 81 games later and the Devils are finishing their season against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Newark. In a year where not a whole lot was expected by the Devils, they really surprised people with their play (especially early in the season). Strong defense and goaltending helped keep the Devils in the playoff race as long as they were. Many new faces made appearances and contributed.
The Devils are coming off of a bad stretch of games. Losers of their last 4 they are hoping to end the season on a high note. The Devils offense has stagnated as they have failed to score 3 goals in a game in their last 8 games. The Maple Leafs are coming off of a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The season comes to a merciful end for the Leafs as well as they will finish with the second, or worst record in the league.
Key to the Game
The key for the Devils this game is to take advantage of a weak team and score. In what might be Patrik Elias’ last game, it would be nice to see him contribute. The Devils just need to play with intensity and push the attack. Hopefully Blandisi and Boucher can end their rookie campaigns with a nice game and bring some momentum into next season.
Players to Watch
Pavel Zacha
Possibly making his NHL debut, Zacha brings speed, size, and skill to a roster that desperately needs it. Zacha’s Sarnia Sting were ousted from the CHL playoffs which freed him up to make his first NHL appearance in the last game of the season. Zacha could have made his debut against Buffalo but the airport failed to deliver his gear on time. Typical.
Morgan Reilly
Reilly is a dynamic offensive defenseman and a key part of the Leaf’s future. A skilled skater and puck handler, he helps run the Maple Leaf attack from the back end. Watch for him to make an impact this game.
