Wednesday, the Devils lost, 3-0 against the Dallas Stars. It was another frustrating loss at home as the Metropolitan Division gets even tighter. The loss drops New Jersey to 16-10-1 on the season.
Recap
Period One
The Devils and Stars played a very evenly matched first period that included seven minutes and 41 seconds of uninterrupted action. Jake Oettinger and Jacob Markström both made a few impressive stops, with the best of them coming from the former who robbed Juho Lammikko in tight. Despite all the action, the game stayed 0-0 after one period.
Period Two
The Devils had the better of play through the first half of the second, but one blunder was all Dallas needed. Miro Heiskanen was left all alone on the near-side and he made no mistake, burying his fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0. With just under two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the second period, and after the Devils had built up some momentum again, Dallas struck again. Jason Robertson had an open net and made no mistake. Dallas led 2-0 after two periods.
Period Three
The Devils and Stars played a fairly even period to kick things off in the third, but just over seven minutes in the Stars put the game away. Mikko Rantanen made a nice play the bat the puck down to himself and knock it in. The Devils had a few chances after that, but Jake Oettinger was rock solid the whole way to a 31-save shutout. Dallas took this game by a final of 3-0.
Game Notes
Puck Does Lie
Normally when a team plays well they win and when they play bad they lose. The Devils seem to have this backwards thus far in 2025. In the team’s 16 wins they have a 48.9 Corsi-for percentage (CF%) and 46.7 expected goals percentage (xG%). In the team’s 11 losses those numbers jump up to a 52.7 CF% and 49.4 xG%, respectively. Definitely an odd trend that you would expect to correct itself over time.
Dallas Wins in New Jersey
When someone tells you that Dallas won big in New Jersey most of the time you’ll think they’re talking about the Cowboys and the Giants. However, the Dallas Stars have made Newark a second home whenever they’ve visited in recent years. Over their last six visits to the Prudential Center, the Stars are 6-0-0 with a plus-17 goal differential and 88.2 penalty kill percentage (PK%).
