After a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Rangers last night, there’s no time to dwell as the New Jersey Devils get right back into preseason action tonight at 7:00 PM to take on the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
The Canadiens are also coming off a game of their own from last night- a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals. Former Devil, Devante Smith-Pelly picked up the game-winning goal for Washington (against another former team of his no-less) in the third period. Most of the veterans played last night so you can likely expect to see a few different names written in from both sides tonight.
Players to Watch
Nico Hischier- Expect him to be back in the lineup after having the night off against the Rangers. He had an impressive debut against the Capitals and is ready to show why he belongs on the NHL roster in October. He is the number one overall pick so expectations are rather high, and making the team is certainly top priority. Expect another good game from the top prospect.
Will Butcher- Again expect Butcher to suit up after spending last night off the ice. The defensive prospect seems to show a lot of promise but certainly has much to prove if he still wants a shot at the big leagues right out of the gate. It’s currently up in the air at the moment so expect to see a lot of Butcher on the ice tonight.
Goaltending Matchup
Both Carey Price and Cory Schneider played half-games yesterday, so it’s highly unlikely either player takes the ice tonight. Look for Scott Wedgewood to see most (if not all) the action for the Devils as we are now at game three of the preseason. It’s time to let the younger guys take over for a couple of days. Considering it’s also a back-to-back for the Canadiens, do not be surprised if you see Al Montoya taking on most of the workload tonight.
