In what looked like another sure-fired loss for the Devils, they came out swinging in the third period and managed four unanswered goals to complete an epic comeback against the Nashville Predators for a 5-4 overtime victory.

Things were looking bleak after the second period. The Devils were down 4-1 entering the second intermission and were out attempted 25-9 by Nashville in the second frame. The Predators were in complete control of the game and a comeback seemed unlikely. All things pointed to the Devils coming out of the road trip empty-handed.

However, things changed drastically in the third period. Mike Cammalleri scored just 25 seconds in to cut the Devils deficit to two and that was just the beginning of things to come. Shortly afterwards, Andy Greene scored after Pekka Rinne left a rebound off a Vernon Fiddler shot and all of a sudden, it was a one goal game.

Peter Laviolette quickly used his timeout and got his team to settle down defensively. Opportunity came knocking for the Devils when they were awarded a power play with just under 9 minutes remaining in the game. The Devils took full advantage as Adam Henrique tied up the game on a wrister from the slot. It was the first power play goal Nashville had given up at home all season long.

The Devils managed to get the game to overtime yet again. Nashville spent most of the frame in the Devils end, but with just 18 seconds left, Taylor Hall set up Mike Cammalleri for the game winner to complete the epic comeback.

Game Notes

• The Devils were opportunistic last night. They only had 22 shots on goal, but managed to score on five of them, including 4 goals on 5 shots in the third period and OT. They certainly got a bit lucky, but considering how things were going for the first forty minutes, you’ll gladly take it.

• Mike Cammalleri is absolutely on fire. He started the comeback in the third period and finished it off with the game-winning goal in overtime. He has 11 points in six games since returning to the team after being away for personal reasons. He’s averaging 3.8 shots on goal in those six games. If he keeps shooting that often, expect his scoring streak to continue.

• It was nice to see Adam Henrique score a goal and was it ever an important one. He needs to shoot the puck more often because good things happen when he does. If he can start scoring regularly, it’ll be a huge lift in addition to what New Jersey is getting from the rest of their top six forwards.

• Despite the win, the Devils were outshot 42-22, including 77-37 in shot attempts for the game. You’re not going to win a whole to ton playing like that and it’s making things difficult for their goaltenders. They’ll need to buckle down defensively and make life easier for Kinkaid and Schneider.

• Although he gave up four goals, Keith Kinkaid was solid in net last night. He made 38 saves on 42 shots and made big stops down the stretch that allowed New Jersey to get back in the game. That being said, the Devils have to be a lot better in front of their goalies. They can’t ask Schneider or Kinkaid to being making 30-40 saves a night or otherwise, they’ll be in rough shape.
